My name is Suharyanto. Everyone calls me Harry. I am from Indonesia. Here in IDEC, I am taking Master Degree under supervision of Kusakabe Sensei. My research interest is student’s motivation in English Education.

My Background

I graduated from English Education Department in Yogyakarta State University in 2013. I was joining so many students’ activities during my time in Yogyakarta State University. One of my memorable moment is when I was selected to be the Chairman of OSPEK (New Students’ Campus Orientation) in 2008. I led a big committee, around 150 members, to conduct this event. This made me understand how to work collaboratively with people, handle big pressures, and develop my communication skills.
After graduated from State University of Yogyakarta, I then continued working in Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta as an English teacher in 2013. There, I taught English for many students from various background or department, such as Accounting, International Relation, Islamic Education, Law, etc. This experiences, made me understand that English is very important for all. Every field work required English as the main language for communication.
In 2015, I was introduced to Kusakabe Sensei from my Indonesian colleague. Kusakabe sensei is one of the experts of comparative study in Hiroshima University. I was thinking that it was a big opportunity for me to improve both of my education and career. So, in April 2016, I decided to continue my study in IDEC to take a Master degree under his supervision.

My Research Interest

Motivation is one of the important factors which are really important in language learning. Most university students in Indonesia want to learn English because they think that it will be very useful for certain instrumental and practical goals, such as getting a job, reading foreign newspaper or text, or understanding literature. Some students also learn English in order to be able to understand, relate, or communicate with people of the culture who speak in English. In another words, students want to learn English with different motivation.
I believe that it is important to investigate the students’ motivation in learning English since it will help English lecturers who teach at University to understand the extent of the strength of the students’ motivation in learning English. When the lecturers find that the students’ motivation in learning English is high, the lecturers should take care of it so that the goals of teaching and learning programs can be achieved. However, when the lecturer see that the motivation is low, they have to try to find out and use the most appropriate way or method of teaching to encourage the students to study English more seriously. By understanding the various types of learners’ motivation in learning English, lecturers will be wiser in teaching and treating the students during the lesson. Therefore, I am really interested to conduct study about the students’ motivation in joining English Literature department because it is needed to be done.

My experience in Japan

I arrived in Japan on March 24, 2016. My first impression when I landed in Osaka airport is the temperature. Japan is really cold and I am not quite familiar with this situation. I had to use two jackets after I landed in Osaka airport. That day was also quite windy so I had to use a mask to cover my breath. As you know that Indonesia is a tropical country. It is always hot there almost for a whole year. I never experienced this cold situation before. However, I have already a little bit adapted with this cold temperature here.
The next thing that I notice about Japan is the traffic situation. There are so many people ride the bicycle here. Almost every person in Japan has their own bicycle. I was really surprised because not so many people in Indonesia ride a bicycle on the street. Most of us only rides a bicycle during weekend for hobby or exercising. One of my friends, said to me that in Japan, “the one who rides bicycle is a king”. Then, I realized that it is true. Most of car and motor cycle driver always give priority to the bicycle rider here. You will never get this priority in Indonesia. I know it is bad but I have to admit it. In Indonesia, the one who drive the biggest or the most luxurious car is the king.
At the beginning of my time here, I joined a Hanami event held by the Indonesian Community in Hiroshima. It was really wonderful. We sat around together under the Sakura tree and there are so many blossoming Sakura flowers there. It was amazing and was one of my special moment in my life. I never had seen Sakura before, but when I did. I was totally amazed by their beauty.

Thankyou…!!!
