My name is Mochamad Imron Azami from Indonesia. Now, I am master student at Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) Hiroshima University under supervisor Kusakabe Tatsuya. I took educational development as my department in IDEC Hiroshima University. My research focused on English Education in Islamic Boarding School or we use to call it Pesantrenin Indonesia. I compare English education which held in PesantrenNazhatutThullabin rural areas in Sampang – Madura and PesantrenProgresifBumiShalawatin urban areas in Sidoarjo and its implication for future life of Pesantrenas Reform.

I conduct this research because nowadays Pesantrengrow up rapidly and has the main role to develop the society around Pesantren. In the past, Pesantrenhas known as old-fashioned traditional Islamic institution which not alteration their curriculum. They just learned about Arabic language and Islamic education. Nowadays, Pesantrendivided into two categories based on the openness to the curriculum, Salafiand Khalafi. Pesantren Salafi is still consistent to learn Arabic language and Islamic education by SoroganandBandoganmethod (Both Method are Teacher-centered). On the other hand, PesantrenKhalafiis openness by conducting general lesson such as entrepreneur and English Lesson.

This research is comparative study. Observation, interview and analysis documents are used to gather the data during the research. Then the respondents are Kyai(leader of Pesantren),Ustadz(teacher) and the English syllabus or textbook as a document will be analyzed.

In the future, I will do my doctoral research focusing in PesantrenReform in East Java. Why I choose East Java? because East Java is the basis of Pesantrenin Indonesia. With their own uniqueness and indigenous of Pesantren, and the adjustment of Pesantrentime to time, it will be interesting to research it.
