Hello my name is Mochamad Imron Azami from Indonesia. Now, I am master student at Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) Hiroshima University under supervisor Kusakabe Tatsuya. I took educational development as my department in IDEC Hiroshima University. My tentative research is English Education in Islamic Boarding School or we used to call it Pesantren in Indonesia. I compare English education which held in Pesantren at rural areas and urban areas and its implication for future life of their achievement in learning English.

I conduct this research because nowadays Pesantren grow up rapidly and has the main role to develop the society around Pesantren. In the past, Pesantren has known as old-fashioned traditional Islamic institution which not alteration their curriculum. They just learned about Arabic language and Islamic education. Nowadays, Pesantren divided into two categories based on the openness to the curriculum, Salafi and Khalafi. Pesantren Salafi is still consistent to learn Arabic language and Islamic education by Sorogan method. On the other hand, Pesantren Khalafi is openness by conducting general lesson such as entrepreneur and English Lesson. This research just focusses on Pesantren Khalafi As Salafi in Surabaya as representative of Urban Area and Pesantren Nazhatut Thullab in Madura in Rural Area.

This research is comparative study. Observation, interview and analysis documents are used to gather the data during the research. Then the respondents are Kyai (leader of Pesantren), Ustadz (teacher) and the English syllabus or textbook as a document will be analyzed.

I also interested about Japan Education reform. This case is become my reason why I continue my master degree in Japan. Regarding to the problem of education in my country, much related to the educational policy, I decided to study about Japan educational policy that bring succeed to Japan into developed country. With the 3 big achievements, such as Meiji Restoration, educational reform after World War II and Nakasone Legacy hopefully I can learn Japanese experience and expertise in making educational policy.
